One of the most important dates on the calendar across the globe is Mother’s Day, celebrated in Australia on the second Sunday of May each year.

In 2021 in Australia, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 9 and this is also the case in many other countries including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Philippines, South Africa, China, Japan and most European nations.

The concept of Mother’s Day was borne in the USA early in the 20^th century, when West Virginian resident Anna Jarvis launched a campaign for Mother’s Day to be officially recognised in 1905, after her ‘mom’ had passed away.

The first official recognition was three years later when Jarvis arranged a special memorial for her mother.

You will notice that Great Britain is not included in the above list of countries, as in the UK, Mother’s Day has been around for many centuries longer.

During the Middle Ages, a tradition developed where people who had moved away from the family home to other areas to obtain work would return to visit their local churches – and their mothers – on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the six weeks period leading up to Easter Sunday).

This event became known as Mothering Sunday in England, and as the time of Easter (and therefore Lent) varies from year to year, so does Mothering Sunday.
